Being the first Product Designer in the company
I joined Relesys as their first Digital Product Designer. Prior to working there, I've been working for fairly successful start-ups with clear structure and organisation. The opportunity to join a company as their first designer was very exciting, it was like having a blank canvas in front of me with a lot of possibilities.
UI kit
My first weeks were spent on structuring and organising Figma files. The process involved many talks with developers and project managers in deciding a good handover structure.
A project that needed the most work, was definitely building and structuring our UI kit. The foundation was built by our frontend developers, and it definitely needed a ”designer’s touch”. In building and expanding the components, I followed the Atomic Design methodology, and have made each components into atoms, which helped me create a more organised, structured and scalable system.
Project: Survey module for frontline workers
At Relesys, we often got an opportunity to work directly with our clients on various improvements to our app. A well-known Danish retailer Coop, have asked us to brainstorm improvements to our survey module, and make survey data more accessible to their frontline workers. Our client has expressed a need to keep their employees engaged, while also wanting to know how they can improve their workplaces and help their employees feel more valued, heard and empowered.
Currently, there are a lot of employee engagement platforms out there, however most of them don't support a good mobile experience - which is crucial for clients working in retail, manufacturing or hospitality in supporting their non-desk employees.
Research
The research began by collecting data from most known employee survey platforms to familiarise ourselves with common practises, trends and overall functionality of those platforms.
Following our initial market research, my team and I had a brainstorming workshop. We focused on finding common patterns, finding solutions for mobile screens and discussed different ways of displaying data.
We ended our brainstorming workshop with a crazy 8's exercise* - our goal was to generate as many ideas as we can, in order to discuss and evaluate them together later.
*A brainstorming exercise that challenges each team member to sketch 8 ideas in 8 minutes.
The workshop gave us a deeper understanding of users' needs, and after sketches and many discussions, we were ready to move onto prototype making.
Key takeaways
The screens were presented and discussed with many of our clients. The idea was to visualise the survey data, and make it easy to read and understand it in a mobile view for store and district managers in retail environments.
Further AB tests and continued tests were carried afterwards, before finalising the scope of the project and implementation planning.
